MUMBAI, October 13, 2025 – Meta Platforms today announced that it has chosen Mumbai and Visakhapatnam as the landing locations for the India leg of its ambitious multibillion-dollar undersea cable initiative, “Project Waterworth.” The project is set to become the world’s longest subsea cable system, significantly enhancing global data connectivity and positioning India as a key hub in the world’s digital and AI infrastructure.

Project Waterworth is a groundbreaking initiative by Meta designed to connect four major continents. Spanning over 50,000 kilometers, the cable will link the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa. It is engineered with a massive design capacity of and is expected to be fully operational by 2030.

One of the project’s most strategic features is its unique “W-shaped” route, which deliberately bypasses the congested and conflict-prone Red Sea corridor. This innovative design mitigates risks associated with geopolitical tensions and physical cable damage, ensuring more stable and secure data transmission.

The selection of Mumbai on the west coast and Visakhapatnam on the east coast holds immense strategic significance for India. The new landing sites will not only fortify the country’s digital ecosystem but also support the government’s data localization objectives by providing robust domestic infrastructure for global data traffic. Experts believe this move will accelerate India’s growth as a major player in the global artificial intelligence landscape by providing the high-capacity bandwidth necessary for developing and deploying AI technologies.
