Iran’s Foreign Minister is engaging in urgent diplomatic talks with the UK, France, and Germany (the E3) to prevent the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on its nuclear program. The crisis was triggered after the E3 invoked the powerful “snapback mechanism” embedded in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

What is the ‘Snapback Mechanism’? ⚖️

The snapback mechanism is a unique and potent provision within the JCPOA. It allows any of the original signatories to unilaterally trigger the reimposition of all pre-2015 UN sanctions if they deem Iran to be in “significant non-performance” of its commitments.

The E3 have given Iran a 30-day deadline to resume full cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors and re-engage diplomatically with the U.S. If these conditions are not met, the international sanctions will automatically “snap back” into place.

The Path to the Current Standoff

The current crisis is the culmination of years of escalating tensions that began after the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 under President Trump.

• The U.S. withdrawal was followed by a “maximum pressure” campaign of sanctions designed to force Iran to renegotiate the deal, which Tehran refused.

• In response, Iran gradually reduced its compliance with the deal’s limits on its nuclear program.

   

• The situation intensified in June 2025, when alleged Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian facilities led Iran to temporarily suspend access for UN inspectors, citing security concerns. This suspension prompted the E3 to trigger the snapback process.

What is the JCPOA? ⚛️

The JCPOA is the landmark 2015 agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, the UK, the U.S., and Germany). The core of the deal was a trade-off: Iran agreed to drastically dismantle much of its nuclear program and allow extensive international inspections in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions.

The current diplomatic efforts represent a critical juncture. The outcome will determine whether the situation reverts to a framework of international sanctions and heightened confrontation or if a diplomatic path can be salvaged to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.
